2022 Ocean University Alliance's Debut Year

Release Date 23 November 2021     Mandarin

On Nov 23, the National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), Taipei University of Marine Technology (TUMT), and NKUST have banded together to form an ocean university alliance.

The alliance offers intercollegiate elective courses and training facilities for students to take on intercollegiate minors or double majors to broaden their skill sets. This new maritime educational alliance can help the development of the talent pipeline that will be important to related industries and crucial to Taiwan’s progress. The hope is that three universities in northern and southern parts of Taiwan share resources and cultivate the workers of the future for the domestic maritime industry.

Many government officials and marine professionals attended this alliance signing ceremony, including National Policy Advisors to President Jason Lin, Ocean Affairs Council (OAC) Deputy Minister Tsai, Ching-Piao, Maritime Port Bureau, MOTC (MPB) Director-General Yeh, Hsieh-Lung, and experts from CR Classification Society (CR) and other enterprises.

The pandemic, unfortunately, posed grave challenges to the global shipping industry. Ships have waited off ports around the globe, unable to unload goods. The broken supply chains affected raw material supply, export control, and even retail sales. At this moment, the shipping industry in Taiwan began to step into the spotlight.

Compared with the industry in the past, the working conditions, international maritime conventions, and communication technology vary significantly, and many even better.

Speaking of the current trend of the shipping industry, NTOU President Tai-Wen Hsu commented: “Compared with the industry in the past, the working conditions, international maritime conventions, and communication technology vary significantly, and many even better.”

The alliance links research capacities in two parts of the nation and offers students flexible courses in a variety of academic and professional fields.

President Yang, Ching-Yu added: “After the merger, NKUST perfectly inherits the maritime research capacities from National Kaohsiung Marine University. Then, we introduced the ‘Cross-campuses Maritime Jointed Research Project,’ which lit new flames in various studies. The alliance links research capacities in two parts of the nation and offers students flexible courses in a variety of academic and professional fields.”

We together can transform the training for future maritime professionals.

TUMT President Lin, Chin-Ye said: “Take marine simulator, for example. Buying such a facility would cost over 10 million NT dollars, but it would be a waste for each school to have one. As we are an alliance, members can share high-cost facilities and use their budget to purchase other training facilities. We together can transform the training for future maritime professionals.”
