Exhibition, Event, and Symposium on Green Energy, Sustainability, Circular Economy

Release Date 10 November 2021     Mandarin

As the pandemic has subsided, the ease of restrictions brought exhibitions and meetings back to Kaohsiung. The three major events NKUST attended on Nov 10 and 11 were all held in Kaohsiung Exhibition Center.

The first two events on Nov 10 were Asia's Sustainable Supply and Circular Economy Conference and Exhibition (TASS 2021) and Green Energy Technology & Circular Economy Matchmaking Event (綠色能源暨循環經濟技術媒合會); the latter was hosted by GLORIA 2.0 SOUTH (大南方科研產業化平台). On Nov 11, NKUST Electrical Engineering Department (EE) held the 42nd Symposium on Electrical Power Engineering & the 18th Symposium on Power Electronics.

TASS 2021 and Green Energy Technology & Circular Economy Matchmaking Event

In TASS 2021, NKUST presented its research capacity on four topics: Education, Teamwork, Sustainability, and Social Engagement.

Our students and professors displayed many excellent solutions for sustainable supply and circular economy on the show: “High-Efficiency Clean Energy Transfer and Storage System (高效潔淨能源轉換與儲存系統),” “Data Visualization and Analysis of Power Consumption and Energy Conservation on Motor (馬達用電量測、節能效益智能評估及數據可視化),” “Driverless Crew Transfer Vessels with Autonomous Navigation System for Offshore Wind (適用於離岸風電的自主導航無人船),” “Maritime Drone Filming and Aerial Photography (海洋空拍與影像技術),” and “Controllable Blade Deflection on a Vertical-axis Water Turbin (可控制葉片偏轉之垂直軸海流發電渦輪機).”

In terms of Social Engagement topic, NKUST exhibited its USR projects. Each project tackled different issues. With the dedication of students and teachers, these projects successfully spread the knowledge of SDGs and revitalized local communities. These projects were executed across remote fishing or farming villages in southern Taiwan, and sometimes these teams invited international teams to create a different sparkle. All their efforts contributed to the success of our USR projects.

In the Green Energy Technology & Circular Economy Matchmaking Event, NKUST showcased two types of research. Mechanical Engineering Department (ME) Associate Professor Lee, Chun-I and Chemical and Materials Engineering Department (CHE) Associate Professor Pan, Chun-Jern presented their research work of “Preparation Method of Nitrogen-Incorporated Carbon/Metal Composites (氮摻雜碳/金屬複合物之製備方法)” at the Event.

The research provided a new method to prepare cathode catalysts for metal-air batteries. Moreover, this method could help extend the lifespan of batteries. It applied “High-Efficiency Clean Energy Transformation and Storage System (高效潔淨能源轉換與儲存系統)” as a solution for clean chemical energy conversion and storage. This type of energy is safe and efficient energy for the home.

Another research exhibited at the Event was “Driverless Crew Transfer Vessels with Autonomous Navigation System for Offshore Wind (適用於離岸風電的自主導航無人船).”

The research team invented the Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) system that combined LiDAR and could navigate autonomous vessels to sail between designated locations and avoid obstacles. This invention can bring benefits such as reduction of labor cost and pandemic transmission risk. Also, cargo ships could apply this system for routine offshore island shipping.

The RTK system won 1st place in the category of Software and Embedded Platform Application (軟體與嵌入式平台應用組) of the 16th MOE DSP Creative Design Contest (第16屆數位訊號處理創思設計競賽) in 2020.

The 42nd Symposium on Electrical Power Engineering & the 18th Symposium on Power Electronics

On Nov 11, EE held the Symposium on Electrical Power Engineering and Power Electronics. Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Tseng, Wen-Sheng, Director General of MOEA Energy Bureau Yu, Cheng-Wei, and many scholars were invited to discuss energy sustainability and the development of green energy.

The program included two keynote speeches and two forums. Speakers shared their insights on the topics of “Energy Transition (能源轉型)” and “the Development of Power Electronics and the Application of Green Energy (電力電子產業發展與綠能應用).”

The forums talked through “Strategies to Step-Up Energy Efficiency (電力能源效率提升策略)” and “Application of Power Electronics in Power Grid and Sustainable Energy (電力電子於電網及永續能源的應用).”

Except for these two forums, Electrical Power Engineering Division, Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) also held two sessions themed around “Independent Power Producers Regulation (獨立電業監管機制)” and “Power Conditioning System for Green Energy (大功率PCS之綠能應用).”
