In compliance with the government policy goal of an all-electric bus fleet in all cities by 2030, Han-Cheng Bus Traffic Company Limited (iBus) has introduced new models of electric buses with new body painting designed by NKUST Cultural and Creative Industries Department (CCI) in Jan.

The iBus appreciated the CCI design team giving a new look to its electric fleet. Led by Prof. Jain, Jhin-Ping (翟治平), the team conceived an image of a giant battery to support the iBus administration’s idea of going green.

The iBus has unveiled this battery-like electric bus on Jan 18 at Jiangong Campus. The battery design covered the overall appearance of the bus, including car interior parts, seats, aisle, doors, and bus body paint.

“It is estimated that the number of global electric buses will be over millions by 2025 to reduce carbon emissions and save energy. To catch up with this unstoppable trend and comply with the Kaohsiung City Government’s policy, our company has been adding new EV buses into our fleet these years. We expect to expand to 103 EV buses by 2025,” says iBus President Han, Hung-Kai (韓洪開).

It was worth mentioning that this project between the iBus and the CCI design team came from discussions between CCI grad student Chiang, Min-Wen (姜閔雯) and her thesis advisor Prof. Jain.

While working on her thesis, Chiang worked in the iBus management team. She considered this project could be a win-win solution to promote the company’s image and develop her essay.

Prof. Jain recruited 5 senior undergraduate students to work on this project together. They were Wen, Han-Lin (文翰霖), Chen, Kai-Ti (陳凱迪), Chen, Pei-I (陳沛儀), Chang, Yun-Fan (張允凡), Lai, Chu-Hsuan (賴楚宣).

The team did a marketing survey and pulled three top-selected designs. The giant battery design was the first design for the iBus.

Prof. Jain noted: “This project is a great opportunity for our students to work with a customer. Students have to understand customer’s needs, consider all feedback, overcome the difficulties in actual practice.”
