A recently published list of the world’s top researchers has reinforced the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology’s reputation as a top-tier research university.

The study was based on standardized citation metrics developed by a group of researchers led by John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, Kevin W. Boyack of SciTech Strategies, and Jeroen Baas of Elsevier Research Intelligence.

The research team collected data on nearly 8 million scientists worldwide, divided them into 22 fields and 176 sub-discipline fields, and identified the ranking of more than 100,000 of the 2% most-cited scientists across all scientific fields.

The list of the top 2% most-cited scientists included two categories: career-long citation impact (1960-2020) and single-year citation impact (2020).

The first category was based on the number of times a researcher’s articles are cited from the first year of publication to 2021 within their specialty areas throughout their careers.

Thirty-one current and former NKUST faculty were included in this career-long citation impact category.

The second category used the same calculation but only took a single year – 2020 into account. The research team evaluated an Aug 1, 2021 snapshot of Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature.

Thirty-two NKUST faculty were among the top 2% for a single year, and 18 of them were also listed in the first category.
