A New Eco Pool in Duona Elementary School Complete

Release Date 1 November 2021     Mandarin

Construction Engineering Department (CE) has completed the ecological pool in Duona Elementary School (多納國小) in Maolin District last month.

It was the fourth task of the Ministry of Education USR project, “Living in a Peach-Blossom Xanadu: A Resilient Township Transformation Project for Kaohsiung Mountain Areas (安居桃花源.港都山線韌性城鄉營建計畫).”

This task led by CE Chair Lin, Chien-Liang was themed around “Environmental Sustainability – Disaster Prevention Education.”

The team promoted education about safety management and disaster prevention in the local community and held it as part of actions to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Apart from building an ecological pool, they installed tiltmeters on buildings to obtain precise data and ensure the stability of school buildings.

We hope not just to bring sparkles to remote villages but to grow with them and develop an environmentally sustainable community. By doing so, our team and residents can both benefit from this project.

“The Corner Team (角映義築團隊) aims to fulfill SDG target 15.4 to ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems. This eco pool will enable students and teachers of Duona Elementary School to have a deeper understanding of biodiversity,” says Chair Lin. “We hope not just to bring sparkles to remote villages but to grow with them and develop an environmentally sustainable community. By doing so, our team and residents can both benefit from this project.”

This environmental education equipped learners and educators with proper knowledge of sustainability. While working on this task, students from Duona Elementary School and NKUST enjoyed the time they interacted with and learned from each other.

The team conducted a thorough investigation of the strata, and they noticed an adjacent stratum that leaned inward the campus. If it collapsed, it would trigger a landslide. Therefore, CE cloud-based disaster prevention team installed tiltmeters that could send real-time data to a cloud system. Everyone could look it up from their smartphones and even receive warnings immediately.

Established for six years, the Corner Team followed its mission goals to complete one task per year. So far, they have accomplished Southlink Hospital (南迴醫院) in the Taitung County, Guangfu Experimental School of Ecology (光復實驗小學) in Cigu District, Tainan City, Taoyuan Jian Shan Elementary School (建山國小), and Maolin Junior High School (茂林國中) in Kaohsiung City.

Many NKUST CE alumni and local enterprises agree upon the vision shared by the Corner Team, which is conserving the environment and providing benefits to local communities. With their substantial and long-term support, the team can better achieve their goal and contribute to remote villages.
