The MOE commissioned NKUST to be responsible for the supervision of the building project for the 3rd training ship “Wind Rider (御風).”
CSBC Chairman Cheng, Wen-Lon, on behalf of the bid-winning company, spoke about the pressing demand for talents with knowledge of marine engineering or ocean engineering, or offshore wind at the shipbuilding ceremony. He called for the academic institutes to nurture young professionals, and his speech won support from President Yang.
The 2021 Student Maker Model Ship Competition, Dec 4th
On Dec 4, the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department (NAOE) held the 2021 Student Maker Model Ship Competition (2021 學生船模創客大賽), which attracted 400 students of 15 high schools to participate in the game.
“The competition comprises two categories. One is the Race Category with 113 teams registered, and another is the Model Ship Building Category with 60 teams registered. In the Race Category, teams have to ensure their model ships sail straight at a certain speed. To do so, they must carefully design their ships, considering all factors, that might include the type of ship, its structural design, its configuration, and its sailing performance. More than that, their ability to complete a model ship is considered,” said NAOE Chair Yang, Min-Hsiung.
For the Race Category, two teams of DYSHS won the gold and silver medal; CYIVS, a regular winner of the game, won the bronze medal.
For the Model Ship Building Category, many teams from CYIVS, DXHS, and SAVS won Special Awards; teams from FSVS and HLIS won Honorable Mention Awards.
The 4th Anniversary of the University, Dec 4th
Four years after the merger, three schools appeared to be a successful match for each other. The combined institution showed vibrant energy and strengthened its academic and research capacities.
At the opening ceremony, President Yang, Ching-Yu gave a speech, in which he mentioned: “The critical factors that keep us stay together are perseverance and innovation. When the pandemic became severe this May, our NKUST community members worked hard to push everything online and transparent. Our students, faculty members, and staff continued their studies, teaching, and daily administrative works, remotely at home. With this experience, we move further to transform our registration system. Freshers of the new academic year can complete their registration online instead of in-person registration. Moreover, the recent government ocean studies and investments have given the maritime industry a boost that increased the need for marine professionals. I'm honored that NKUST has always been the best choice for the industry. And our research capacities and experiences also made us a trustworthy academic entity for the government.”
In the Conference Hall, NKUST Faculty and Staff Choir (NKUST Choir) staged as the first program to celebrate the anniversary. The excellent performance of the NKUST Choir stunned guests and other faculty members.
“Our choir was established after the 3rd anniversary of the university. Back in that day, when President Yang said NKUST Choire would perform on the stage for the next year’s anniversary, we would not dare to dream about it. But after intensive practices for a year, we make our dreams come true,” said Dr. Dong, Cheng-Di, Dean of Hydrosphere Science College.
The second program was a student musical in which music, plots, and dance performances captivated the audience and left a lasting impression on everyone.
Another concurrent event was held at the Art Center, where all donors and supporting alumni were invited to an Appreciation Breakfast. Some alumni have been retired and shared their experiences and stories in the shipbuilding industry or shipping industry.
